Like a Good Deed . . .

How far that little candle throws his beams!
So shines a good deed in a naughty world.

from "The Merchant of Venice"

Springtime's yellows shine strongest on rainy gray days such as we had yesterday.

Daffodils gleam against wet stone and the forsythias, so recently unpromising straggles of bare brown stems, throw up their arms, suddenly festooned with yellow bells, and ring out the glad message of Spring's imminent arrival.

All around us, Springtime yellows are unfurling, shining out like candles in the gloom.

Doesn't it make you want to dig?
Just seeing the first signs makes you feel good! I don't know why but Spring is really exciting this year, like it has been so long since we could enjoy the outside.
I know that must be double with you, given all the snow you all have had.

You are making me green with envy! But our time is coming, a little more snow is melting every day and I have seen a few crocuses peeping up by south-facing walls.

This early bloom is beautiful and welcome and but there's always that underlying fear that a sudden dip in temps will do it all in. Two years ago, just before Easter we were lavishly a-bloom, only to be hit with a hard freeze on Saturday night followed by an Easter Sunday that was a sorry, sorry sight.

And no fruit that year.
